Task 14: (Individual) KJ: Storyboarding Music Videos - deadline 3.35 today (Thursday)

How are you adopting a postmodern style in the production of storyboards for a music video?

Post six frames each showing how you are challenging the conventions of traditional film making techniques when planning shots for your music video.  Write a commentary explaining.

The following music video by the Weekend is typical of the postmodern style of music videos in that it uses intertextuality of first person shooter games to create a pastiche (a reworking of a style from another form or text).  As well as using POV,  a single take (or made to look like one), whip pans and relationship between music and visuals, it is interesting because the video is used to lead the sound rather than the other way around.

Task 13: Group: Pitch. Deadline: Wednesday 12th October Period 1 and 4

This task is a presentation to the class (a sample of the target audience) and teachers in order to be given the greenlight to continue storyboarding and filming.  You can complete this in prezi or ppt.  All the group must be involved equally in the allocation of tasks for this in addition to the presentation of ideas to the class.  You will be given a mark for this as individuals as part of your planning grade.  As teachers we need to be confident that you have thought through every second of your track and have realistic ideas.  You are aiming for ten minutes including playing a section of the track to the class.

To include in pitch:
  • Play a small section of the track. How are you responding visually to all areas of the track? (you could show lyrics, treatment; explain the relationship between sound, lyrics and visuals – illustrative, amplified, disjunctive. Six frame storyboard showing first shot, middle and last shot) This must be detailed.
  • How are you constructing a cohesive band image across your three productions? (Show examples of print development, screen shots from videos you have analysed, refer to metanarrative and genre)
  • What locations are you using for your production and how? (show stills and clips from all the locations you are using, explain any challenges and how you are going to overcome them)
  • What cast and crew are you using?  What roles will they be taking on? (explain any logistics in terms of planning)
  • What style are you going to be constructing in your productions? (show clips of camera techniques – your own and found; visual effects from videos and print you like.  What kit will you need or effects you will need to learn to achieve this)
  • Once you have completed your pitch, you need to upload it to the blog.  Underneath the presentation you need to post the feedback from the class and teachers  (2nd piece of audience research) with the heading:

    - My role in the pitch was:  (be very specific about which areas/slides you were responsible for although a group post each member will need to edit and add this.)
-Feedback from Pitch:  (bullet points, class and teacher points both strengths and questions/points for consideration)
    - Forward Planning:  (what do you now need to do to move on to next stage?)

Task 12: Group: Audience Research - Concept. Deadline: Friday 14th October

Testing your concept on the target audience is an industry standard practice in ensuring a successful promotional campaign.  It is also given a lot of significance by the exam board.  This is the first of at least four audience research tasks.  Use the following headings to layout your response.  This is a blog post, ppt or prezi or short film/podcast.

Target audience: Explain who they are in terms of demographics and psychographics.

Purpose: To test your concept on a sample of your target audience. To ensure you are meeting audience expectations; considering conventions of the genre and the metanarative of the artist or band.

Methodology: Complete a questionnaire using Survey Monkey or another online template. Include a range of closed and open questions. Vary the format of your questions; for example, ranked and scaled questions. You should complete between 8 and 12 questions closely related to your ideas. Confirm your ideas with them and pose questions which are are currently unsure of (if there are any). Include a link to your track.  Send to as many people as you can.

Questionnaire: Once it has been checked by KJ; send it off either public or private (your questions will reflect this) Post your questionnaire on the blog.

Results: Compile the results either on a blog post or a ppt or prezi. Use bar/pie charts to display quantitative information and select interesting qualitative information.

Evaluation: Reflect on your results and respond to them, considering both ones that agree with your ideas and ones which don't.

Task 11 Indiv. Technical Analysis Deadline: Thursday 29th September 6pm

Your concept should now be taking shape.  Choose a video each that is very similar technically to your idea to analyse.  It doesn't have to be for the same genre as your track, but should be in the same style so that it can directly inform your concept.  Submit as a post, this should contain:

  1. embedded video
  2. Shot by shot break down of key sequences - if there is repetition then it isn't necessary to do the whole video (length of shot in secs, framing, movement, key aspects of mise-en-scene, any creative transitions)
  3. Choose 10 frames that could inspire your work and annotate to say what you like about them

Make sure you use lots of technical terminology.  CLICK HERE for an exemplary post from last year

Task 9: Group - Camera Movement and Close-ups Deadline: Friday 30th September 6pm

How can you achieve technical excellence by incorporating movement into your music video? Comment on how you are planning on achieving this:  Using the jib or track, dolly set up, steadicam or handicam can be ways of doing this.  Include clips of your own practice, other music videos which incorporate movement in a way you would like to emulate.

Chet Faker – Gold – tracking/dolly shot – one take

Great use of Close ups
